I was reluctant to take it at first, but am now finding it to be both my most frustrating and most amusing class. So far, we have gone over everything from torture, to the existence of God, to abortion and so on. I find myself constantly in a state of confusion with what I have been raised to believe and what I find myself realizing I believe now. I will often comment in class and as someone counters my argument, I find myself realizing that I was wrong all along. I think back to my high school years and the view of the world I had then and compare it to my beliefs and world view now and realize that not in a million years would I have expected to agree with some arguments I agree with now. If someone had told me that I would do complete 180's on many ethical and moral topics in the future, I would not only have thought they were crazy, I would have been angry at them. As a whole, we like to close our eyes and ears. We get angry when others challenge our beliefs. "We are what we believe". I want to change this in my life. "I am what I decide to believe." The most mind numbing thing I have learned in this class is my lack on knowledge of the world around me and the history of why people are they way they are and why people react the way they do. The most recent occurrence being this article I had to read for my class on the Holocaust. "The Childhood origins of World War II and the Holocaust".
In many ways, I am furious at my high school history teachers. In other ways I am furious with myself. I recall the countless times my dad tried and tried and tried to open my eyes to history and the world around me. I blatently ignored him, 'knowing' that it's history....boring! I was taught all about the holocaust and WWII in school, but not once was it explained why something like this could happen. I always wanted to know HOW people could be so apathetic to what is going on around them. Although perhaps not to the same extreme, it still blew me away when I came up with the epiphany that WE are a part of this. The countless examples; starving children, countries with STD's out of control, India with it's lawless brothels; we are apathetic to the suffering. We do little to solve the problems saying "it's not our country, not our problem". I want to make a difference in the world. If it means teaching mothers how to raise children healthily, saving lives, or going to Africa to educate on the importance of washing your hands before delivering a baby, I want to do it. This is why I want to be a nurse, so that someday, I will be able to make a difference in the world.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-46713362761593314962010-02-13T11:03:00.007-07:002010-02-13T11:43:35.848-07:00UpdateHaven't blogged, not apologizing. :)

So, since my last post, not a ton has happened. Well, a lot has happened, but not anything too exciting that I can really post pictures on or anything. Biggest life changing event: I quit my job so I could go back to school full time! It was a hard decision. I have been with the clinic for 2 1/2 years and have loved it! Every job has those things you will never miss, but all in all, I loved it. I loved the quirkiness of the doctor I worked for, I loved the everyday schedule I held, and of course I loved the biweekly paycheck. I miss a lot of it, but I am happy with my decision. I love being back in school. I feel like I am progressing in my life plan. I feel like I have a life plan! I feel smarter! I am studying to be a nurse, and only have a few classes left before I can start applying to nursing schools...the last two are the hardest too...Anatomy and Physiology. I had started the semester out signed up for both, but as it turned out, Physiology is just not my cup of tea. I am all things retarded when it comes to Physiology, so I decided to take it slower and switch around some classes. I am now on track to receive my associates degree at the end of this semester.

A few odds and ends that I think I may have left out:
I am currently enrolled in a tap dancing class. I have wanted to learn to tap dance ever since I was a kid! I signed myself up in September and got to work. I am now in the intermediate class. I love it so much!...Ryan could tell you that! I can't stop. If there is a hard floor, even carpet, I am usually tapping. Most of the time I don't realize I'm doing it till he looks at me with his "you're doing it again, and everyone is watching you" look. I was even in a recital at the beginning of January. If anyone remembers me from high school...they know how much I have being put on the spot in recitals! It usually ends bad...but this, I couldn't wait for!

Callista is doing great, she has grown a full 2 inches and a good deal around. You probably couldn't tell if you aren't me, but I'm excited. However, I think I have decided that I like her more this size...I can sit and watch movies while I hold her and play with her.

I have also enrolled in an Ice Skating class through school. It is really very hard. I am supposed to lean this way and put my other foot...where?? Are you crazy? Ok....OUCH!. Needless to say, I might need two new hip bones and a new elbow by the end of the semester....But, I can skate forwards, backwards, turn around while skating, do one jump...badly, and forward crossovers...I'm still working on backwards crossovers...

Lastly, my favorite class this semester is also the shortest and most dangerous. Snowboarding! I love it! And I have learned so much! I love boarding. It is so much fun! Unfortunately, it is also the most painful. I think I am just starting to learn how to board well enough that a helmet may start to come in handy......hence the whiplash I am currently experiencing. The mountain is really really Icy right now because PA is hogging all of the snow! Half of my snowboarding class is out of commission with broken bones. I keep thinking...it's only a matter of time...but I'll be careful. If it does happen, and I have access to my arms...I'll be sure to post about it. For now, though....this was a very condensed update.

Oh, and I'd like to share my sister's new blog with everyone! She makes jewelry and she makes some of the cutest and most elegant stuff! I am so jealous of her talent I am green!
Fashionable baby Python! For my birthday, Ryan purchased her for me. I have wanted one ever since high school when my physics teacher brought his baby python in to show the class. We picked her up on November 8, 2009 and we fed her a thawed fuzzy mouse for the first time the other day. She lives in my living room! My 3 roommates were hesitant to agree with me that it was a great idea, and after only one week, they all love her! Kat has only held her twice, and Tacie was very welcoming the first day. Jamie took 2 days, but now holds her all the time. Here are some pictures!

So, this last year, instead of breaking the bank and getting all 8 brothers and sisters a gift, we decided on getting the sibling younger than you a gift....I really am not a picky person and I don't need much. This is the absolute only thing I wanted and you can't really buy it. My roommate has one and I always steal her earrings from it, so I desperately wanted it, especially considering my recent explosive fetish for jewelry. Bekah is absolutely amazing! Not only is it exactly what I asked for, she also made me a necklace to go with it and a necklace and bracelet holder too! She's the best!

Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-5844084818447879222009-02-28T08:49:00.007-07:002009-02-28T12:11:09.684-07:00Gabirella!!
Alright, so I keep forgetting to post this. By the way...I went back to school last semester. I'm attending UVU right now, Pre-Nursing. Last semester, I took Chemistry (from Jolene Young, best teacher I've ever had), a Chem lab, and Nutrition. That's 8 credits, and 40 hours a week at work. It's hard. I just started up this next semester taking Biology, Bio lab, Into to Nursing, and English-technical writing. 9 Credits and 40 hours at work. It's hard, but it's still fun. My roommates never see me, and everyone wonders why...I love being back in school. It makes me feel like I am progressing somewhere in life. I can apply to Nursing School after this semester. UVU is the #1 Nursing School in Utah, so I will try for it, but the plan is to apply a lot of different places. Ideally, UVU is where I want to go... So, I will also apply for the spring semester next year. I'm not sure what area I want to work in as a nurse, but I do know that I at least want to be a surgical nurse of some kind, assisting in surgery. I love that kind of stuff! Anyhow, it's a long update, and I'll do my best to keep on top of things from now on!
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-64397223067473490492008-12-14T00:03:00.006-07:002008-12-14T00:36:04.155-07:00A Seattle Birthday! So, I turned 21 on November 1st and had a blast! I keep telling myself it will get done. So, keep your eyes open for a few new posts the next couple days...

So, My trip home was amazing! I love Pennsylvania so much and I miss it already. I hope that in the future, my kids will get to visit their Grandparents and think of it fondly like I do. One of the things I did while I was home was take on the Roots adventure. "Roots" (pronounced the Pennsylvanian way with the "oo" sounding like foot) is an open, old fashioned market selling all sorts of goodies from fresh picked fruit, to cow's tongues, to pig stomachs, to sunglasses, kites, luggage, and all sorts of plain old JUNK. It's open every Tuesday. On Tuesday Evening and into the night, there is a food auction where they auction off all sorts of bulk food items to the highest bidder, usually being the person willing to top 50 cents. I have many memories of this beautiful place filled with all sorts of lovely smelling Amish...and their delicious home baked goods. Just writing this is making me nostalgic.

This is my sister in law MicaAnd my sister Jenny

Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-48613122428311242242008-08-03T12:41:00.002-06:002008-08-03T13:02:57.531-06:00Home Videos
Jenny's son, Benton, is so, stinking cute! Since my last wonderful experience, I put the magnet on my refrigerator, in hopes that I might remember it and put it under my car. About 2 weeks ago, I took it out to my car and put it in my car. Last night, I did it again. I locked my keys in my car, again, last night. And where was my magnet?????

...Needless to say, it's under my car now, FINALLY!Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-55036795725259443702008-06-12T11:58:00.006-06:002008-06-16T23:27:54.945-06:00Keys Please!!It would turn out, that every time my best friend comes into town, I end up with some sort of adventure, and somehow, it always ends up having something or another to do with keys! The locksmith had to take my entire car door apart in order to get the code to make a new key. I ended up not getting back in time to go to work that day and spending a lot more money than I had intended to!
And my most recent encounter!:
Since losing my car key, I made 2 spares. One, I kept in my purse in case I lost my keys in my house or otherwise, which I have used, and another in the ashtray of my car as a last backup. Plus the main key for my car on my keyring! So, THE story!
Ryan, my best friend, and I went to the Springville power tumbling gym last weekend. I, in all my wisdom, left my purse in my car so that i wouldn't need to leave it unattended at the gym. I grabbed my keys from the ignition, hit the locks and got out. 'Bout and hour and half later, I went to get my phone from my car to take some pictures and videos and such to find my car key missing!!!...DUN DUN DUN. I searched for the next hour and a half for my car key and after trying to break into my car, gave up and caught a ride home. The next morning, my sister who loves me so much, Bekah, drove down to Provo and took us to Springville. As I pulled in, and hopped out, in the glorious daylight, I could see my one, single, lone key sitting under the Emergency Brake....GO FIGURE! I have one of those key rings that is a hinge, and it somehow or another popped off my keyring. After trying our best in all sorts of tactics to unlock the door with a coat hanger, and other such devices, we jimmy-rigged the coat hanger in the passengers door and rolled the window down enough to squeeze my arm inside. Unlock the door and sing praises! That same day, I invested in a magnet to hold my key on the bottom of my car....where is it???....still sitting on my refrigerator. I am cruising for it to happen again, I just know it! Like I said, an adventure with him every time!Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-15435024797073366422008-04-17T18:11:00.004-06:002008-04-17T18:28:10.538-06:00Once Upon a TimeComing up in July, I am going home! Home is an escape from my reality.
I left home hoping that I would be able to leave everything behind and never have to face it again. 'I am bigger than there'. But, after leaving and spending some time away, I have realized that home is what made me who I am. It's not really time to escape it, but build on what I will become! I am so excited!Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-3957520043819180472008-02-08T21:03:00.000-07:002008-02-08T21:25:58.424-07:00Me, Myself, and ISo, let me start this blog off with a background. I am in my 20's, living in Utah State. I grew up in Pennsylvania and moved to Idaho for college. After deciding that time was moving way too fast for me, I moved to Utah to work until I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I really do love school, but I can't decide what I want to do. I took the fall semester off and am currently taking the winter semester off, but what I really want to do is go back to school. I am making really good money as a back surgeon's office assistant. I am respected and liked. I made a verbal commitment to the Doctor that I would stay with him until I moved away due to marriage or babies or whatever. Currently, I am single. This is possibly the happiest I have ever been in my entire life, right now. Not because I'm single, but because I feel like I have finally started to make decisions of my own. I am living my life the way I want to and not the way I feel I should because others will judge me if I don't live up to their standards. I have always had a boyfriend from just after I turned 16 until July of last year. I am a very loyal girlfriend, but when it's over, I let it be, until more recently of course, but that is a long story for another post. Being single is a little newer to me, and I think that I like it, though there are more times than I like to admit that I just want someone to hold me close and tell me that they care about me. I think that everyone wishes for that sometimes. I think that my hobbies, were I able to afford them, would be ice skating (not that I'm any good), and reading all day long, and soaking in sun. I love the heat that the sun gives off in the summer. I wish I could keep it all year round.
So, this blog was inspired by a few people, my sisters of course, my brother, who died last year and had a blog that no one really knew about...he did his best to distance himself from the family often...and a girl at work whose blog I love to read. I haven't decided if I will share this with the rest of the world yet or not. I guess I'm kinda worried that it will turn into more of a venting blog than a "this is what's new" blog. Either way, I'm keeping a low profile on it for now. Who knows, maybe someday, I will be killed in a freak lightning strike and someone in my family will stumble across my blog and will understand why i was struck by lightning, cause God knows sometimes I wait for the bolts with some of the things I say! :)Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311815145206053195.post-67686696802222057542008-01-29T19:29:00.000-07:002008-01-29T21:07:12.583-07:00A First For EverythingSo, I guess you could say that this really is a first for me. I have always declared that I could never have a blog because I can't spell, and I could never think of things to say. Recently though, I have been enjoying my sisters' blogs as well as a friend's, so I figured, what the heck! Here's hoping that I will get a chance to say all the things I want to say, all my rants and raves, and not take it out on the people around me. So, wish me luck in my first attempt to join the ranks of online storytelling!Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13617669555319644156noreply@blogger.com0
